While migrating with other storks for the winter, Katerina is struck by a hunter’s bullet, and life changes forever for her and her mate. Luka must venture south without her, while she endures winter in Croatia, cared for by a girl and her grandfather. When spring arrives, Katerina hopes to see Luka again, and waits in a nest atop the barn, the farthest distance she can manage to fly.
Written in free verse, this picture book is a celebration of love and a call to protect the routes of migratory birds. Back matter includes my author’s note about real life storks in Croatia, Malena and Klepetan, who were my inspiration. Their love story had been followed online by millions of people for more than 15 years. Malena died in June, 2021, at the age of 28. Klepetan was by her side.

I encourage you to please always support independent book stores. Here are three of my favorite local shops.
